There’s a specific kind of Gilbert optimism required to order a reuben outside of a deli, and I possess it, mostly because the data says we don't have a proper one. That leaves us with a field of contenders ranging from a farm stand with bathroom TVs to a Euro café serving cucumber water that tastes like a vacation.

I’ve eaten nine of them, plus a BBQ pork sandwich that nearly derailed this entire project. Some reubens are dry.

Some are transcendent. Your call.

Fresh house-made bread daily
Fresh-squeezed lemonade served
Server Jhoana exceptionally accommodating
Family-friendly lunch stop
Custom orders handled with care

Flancer's didn't blow me away with the reuben itself, but the bread is the real deal. House-made daily, and you can tell. The corned beef was fine, a little shy on the sauerkraut for my taste. But here's the thing: Jhoana, our server, handled my custom order (extra kraut, mustard on the side) like I was royalty. The fresh-squeezed lemonade is a smart move on a hot Gilbert day. It's a family-friendly spot, loud in a good way. I left satisfied, not amazed. For a sandwich, that's a solid line drive, not a home run. I'd go back for the bread alone. That counts for something.

Generous problem-solving staff
Good margaritas and music

The Porch is where you go when you want a reliable reuben and a beer without any drama. The waitstaff is warm and prompt, which I appreciate when I'm tired and hungry. My reuben was decent, classic, nothing fancy. The Lemon Caesar salad as a side is a surprisingly good pairing, cuts through the salt. It's a solid post-work spot, good margaritas, decent music. The staff solved a seating issue for my group without me even asking. That's the kind of problem-solving that keeps me coming back. Not the best reuben in Gilbert, but maybe the best place to recover from a week. That has value.

Fresh bread that impresses
Mediterranean flavors transport you

Desserts worth dreaming about
Cucumber water is genius

Romeo's Euro Café is where the reuben gets a passport stamp. The fresh bread genuinely impressed me, crusty on the outside, soft within. The Mediterranean flavors on the menu transport you, even if it's just for a lunch hour. My reuben was a bit untraditional, with some unexpected herbs, but it worked. The Euro platter is what I'll order next time, it earns the repeat visits. The desserts are worth dreaming about, I got a slice of something chocolatey and it nearly ruined my afternoon. And the cucumber water? Genius. So refreshing. This place makes you feel like you're on vacation. That is a weapon. The reuben is good, but the whole experience is better.

Highlights
Generational family farm story
Best chicken and waffles
Big portions, fair pricing
Coolest bathrooms with TV
Outdoor seating with misters

Joe's Farm Grill is a whole vibe before you even order. Generational family farm story, the place feels rooted. I tried the reuben, but I have to be honest: the chicken and waffles is the real reason to come. Big portions, fair pricing, you won't leave hungry. The outdoor seating has misters, which are essential in Gilbert. And yes, I'm going to mention the bathrooms. Coolest bathrooms with a TV. I'm not sure why that's a thing, but I appreciate it. The reuben was okay, a little dry on the bread. But the atmosphere and the chicken and waffles make this a worthy stop. It's not my top reuben, but it's my top pick for a weirdly entertaining lunch.

Family and pet friendly
Brews great beer
Delicious personal service
Weekend regular favorite

OHSO Brewery + Distillery is my weekend regular spot. It's family and pet friendly, which means I can bring the whole chaotic crew. They brew great beer, and that matters when you're eating a salty reuben. The service is personal, they remember my order. My reuben here is consistent, solid, maybe not groundbreaking, but reliable. It's the kind of place where you can settle in for a long afternoon. The beer list changes, which keeps things interesting. If you're looking for a reuben with a side of good beer and a dog under the table, this is it. It's not fancy. It's better. It's comfortable. The comfort counts for a lot in the reuben hunt.

Highlights
Whiskey flights mostly good
Six-year repeat customers
Great taco flavors
Excellent group service
Quick, delicious lunches

Copper Still Moonshine Grill has earned me as a customer for six years. That's longer than most of my relationships. The whiskey flights are mostly good, and the tacos have great flavor. The reuben? It's a different kind of beast here. It's more of a stacked, messy affair. Excellent group service, they handled my loud, indecisive party with grace. Quick, delicious lunches happen here, which is a rare combo. I appreciate that this place can pivot from a quick bite to a long whiskey-fueled evening. The reuben is good, not great, but the taco game is strong. I keep coming back for the whole package. The service is the real star. They make it easy.

Highlights
Great food, great vibe
Worth a repeat visit
Salmon and chicken rock
Fast-casual, not fancy
Tucson comparison disappoints

Wildflower is fast-casual, not fancy, and that's fine. Great food, great vibe, worth a repeat visit. The salmon and chicken dishes rock, which makes it a solid lunch spot. But my reuben here was disappointing. It was fine, serviceable, but missing something. I compared it to the Wildflower in Tucson, and that one was better. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's the specific bread that day. I wanted to like it more. The atmosphere is pleasant, the staff is nice. But the reuben just didn't hit. I'll come back for the salmon. I won't be ordering the reuben again. It's a decent place, but not for this specific sandwich. That's okay.

Highlights
No wait, friendly service
Amazing food, perfect French toast
Quick service from Perla
Plenty of parking available
Cozy, small local spot

The Crowned Egg is a small, cozy local spot with plenty of parking, which is a miracle in itself. No wait when I went, and the service from Perla was quick and friendly. The French toast is perfect, and the food overall is amazing. The reuben? I tried it, and it's a solid effort. The corned beef is good, the bread is buttered and grilled well. It's not the most innovative reuben, but it checks the boxes. This is a breakfast spot that does lunch right. The vibe is intimate, you feel like a regular even on your first visit. I'd come here for the French toast, but I wouldn't kick the reuben out of bed. It's a good backup plan.

Consistent quality, every visit

The Gilbert House Restaurant feels like walking into a friend's kitchen, if your friend was a really good cook. Cozy, friendly, welcoming. The home cooking is flavor-packed, and the reuben is a prime example. It's a classic, done right, no gimmicks. The waitstaff is attentive and team-oriented, they work together like a well-oiled machine. This is a reliable spot for celebrations, and the consistency is impressive. Every visit, same quality. My reuben was warm, toasty, the kraut was tangy, the dressing was creamy. It was exactly what I wanted. This is the kind of place you trust. It doesn't try to be cool, it just is. That authenticity is why it works.

Welcoming staff, fast service
Dog-friendly patio seating
Great breakfast burrito
Delicious banana pudding
Cozy, small cafe vibe

Worth Takeaway is a small cafe with a big heart. The staff is welcoming, the service is fast. The dog-friendly patio is a plus if you have a four-legged critic with you. The breakfast burrito is great, and the banana pudding is delicious. My reuben? It's a lunchtime player here. It's good, solid, but the burrito is the legend. The cozy, small cafe vibe makes you want to linger, even if you're just grabbing a quick bite. I appreciate the care they put into everything. It's not the fanciest reuben in Gilbert, but it's one of the friendliest. That warmth comes through in the food. I left full and happy. That's a win.

Clean, quick, genuinely kind staff
BBQ pork sandwiches wow tastebuds
Cold draft beer on tap
Paprika-spiced potato salad standout
Fair pricing for quality portions

Retro's Subs & Brews came out of nowhere and slapped me in the tastebuds. It's clean, quick, and the staff is genuinely kind, which is rarer than you'd think. The reuben itself was good, but the BBQ pork sandwich is the real star. I know, I'm here for the reuben. I tried both. The pork won. The paprika-spiced potato salad is a standout side, better than the crinkle fries. Cold draft beer on tap helps the whole experience. Fair pricing for the quality and portion size. I felt like I got a deal, and that never happens. This place earned a repeat visit. My arteries are complaining, but my morale is up.

Highlights
Amazing sourdough bread flavor
Great for catering events
On-time and reasonably priced
Impressed funeral service guests
Wide sandwich variety offered

Sourdough & Co. in Chandler, just outside Gilbert, deserves a mention. The bread is the whole show here, and it's a good show. That sourdough has a tang and chew that holds up against everything. My reuben was solid, served on that amazing bread, which elevated the whole thing. They handled a catering order for a funeral service I was involved with, on time and reasonably priced. The guests were impressed. For a sad occasion, that was a small mercy. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, so you could get lost in the menu. The reuben is a safe, tasty pick. I'd come here for the bread alone. It's worth the drive.
